Perennial, a New England garage-punk trio, is not chasing the downtown New York aesthetic of the Television era that many of today’s retro-futurist bands would suit. Its reference points are the Brighton mod culture of “Quadrophenia” and the Memphis sound of Stax Records, and its music evokes a rainy, neon-lit, sound-stage city with a crime thriller playing from a getaway car’s stereo. On the new album “Modernism,” that image is built from the Morse-code-like feedback and siren riffs of guitarist Chad Jewett, along with the eerie organ interludes of Chelsey Hahn on “Baby, Are You Abstract?” and “Perennial ‘65.”
Two years have passed since the previous album, “Art History”; in the meantime came the Beatles-homaging EP “Perennial ‘65” and a deluxe edition of “Art History.” Still, the band is not prolific: “Modernism,” like the three full-lengths before it, runs about 20 minutes, so the formula never wears thin. In spirit it is Jack White reworking the microsongs of Militarie Gun: instead of power chords, hairy single-string riffs blasted through twin Vox amps. The energy keeps surging even when it seems the songs cannot get louder, as in the outro of the title track and the last chorus of “The Shadow.”
The breathers are key. “Granny Smith Apple,” with its clavinet, skiffling drums and synthetic flute reminiscent of a family sitcom’s theme, works as a reset before the whirlwind opening of Side B, “The Shadow.” The A/B split is emphasized even on the cover art, and the second half turns out bigger than the first. Jewett and Hahn trade call-and-response chants and deliberately nonsensical lines like “the red, red robin goes bop, bop boppin’,” delivered with the same conviction as the war cry “modernism’s coming for you.” The lyrics sift through pop-culture references — the Cheshire Cat, Otis Redding, Kerouac, Halloween, The Avengers’ Emma Peel — and on “Me and The Magpie” slide into Edgar Allan Poe-style paranoia.
