Californian producer Mr Chinn has assembled a mix album from the compositions of Gary Davis, a musician whose catalogue has gone almost entirely unnoticed. By chopping and splicing the material, he has turned a scattered legacy into a cohesive, easily digestible record.
The sound is built on dancefloor funk and disco, which feels especially apt now that disco is back in fashion. The key tracks are the upbeat, feelgood dance numbers ‘Got To Get Your Love’ and ‘Roller Rink Funk’; for contrast there are slowed-down soul numbers such as ‘You’re The Best Thing In My Life’. Davis’s versatility shows in meandering, loungey piano parts, jazzy arrangements of Prokofiev’s theme from Peter & The Wolf, and plenty of classy breaks. The result is a very good collection.
Tracklist:
1. Gary Davis - Kikin It from the Oldskool
2. Gary Davis - Professors On Mars
3. Gary Davis - Got to Get Your Love (12" Instrumental Version)
4. Gary Davis - Gee Dee (Dopeman's Mix)
