The retrospective compilation "Chocolate Star The Very Best of Gary Davis" highlights the music of Camden, New Jersey producer and musician Gary Davis and his group Chocolate Star, formed in 1980 with Dennis DJ Jones. Rooted in a diverse musical background—shaped by his uncle, jazz organist Richard "Groove" Holmes, formal arrangement studies under Manny Albam, and time spent at Peter Brown's P&P Records—Davis crafted a distinct fusion of funk and dance music. Backed by local Camden musicians, the group produced influential tracks such as the jazz-inspired "Gee Dee," the club anthem "Gotta Get Your Love," and the drum-machine pioneer track "The Pop." The collection traces the evolution of street-smart disco into early hip-hop and foundational house music.
