The Clancy Brothers are a legendary Irish folk group that emerged from New York’s Irish-American community in the late 1950s. Led by Paddy, Tom and Liam (with other members joining later), they brought traditional Irish songs to international prominence. Rich harmonies, driving rhythms and charismatic stage presence renewed the sound of Irish folk and made the group one of the key figures of the folk revival.
The compilation “Rebels, Rovers & Rakes: 1959-62” gathers recordings from their peak years and is built in two contrasting halves. Side A pairs patriotic ballads — “The Rising of the Moon,” “The Croppy Boy,” “The Foggy Dew,” “Kevin Barry,” which convey history with passion and authenticity — with lively reels and drinking songs: “Whiskey, You’re The Devil,” “The Real Old Mountain Dew,” “A Jug of Punch,” “Finnegan’s Wake.” Side B is more intimate: “The Parting Glass,” “Johnny I Hardly Knew Ye,” “Roddy McCorley,” “Brennan On The Moor,” along with the traditional “I’ll Tell My Ma,” “The Wild Colonial Boy,” “Shoals of Herring” and “Will Ye Go, Lassie Go? (Wild Mountain Thyme).” These songs showcase the group’s mastery of storytelling, melody and vocal harmony. The collection offers a definitive portrait of the band at its peak and suits collectors and folk fans as well as newcomers to the genre.
