Old Days Records is releasing a reissue in a new format: the compact disc comes in a paper sleeve styled after an analog 7-inch single. The disc can be displayed face-up, framed as a piece of art, or simply kept in a collection. This packaging combines nostalgia for vinyl with the convenience of CDs and liner notes, and is aimed at collectors.
The reissued title is the second album by the American singer Joan Baez, released in 1961 on Vanguard Records, one of the emblems of the 1960s folk revival. It was produced by Maynard Solomon. The studio recording rests on Baez’s pure soprano and her guitar. On two songs, “Bank of the Ohio” and “Pal of Mine” (the latter familiar from the Carter Family repertoire), she is joined by the bluegrass group The Greenbrier Boys. Banjo and vocal harmonies gave folk music new energy. The album earned a nomination at the 5th Grammy Awards for Best Contemporary Folk Performance.
Its fourteen traditional songs are arranged so that the record can be seen as a “comparative musical geography”: a single performer traces how old British ballads migrated to Appalachia in the American South. The album opens with “Wagoner’s Lad,” where guitar and a clear voice convey the unadorned beauty of a traditional ballad. It then moves through stories of fates that history has nearly erased: “The Trees They Do Grow High” dispassionately tells of an unreasonable political marriage, “The Cherry Tree Carol” is devoted to the Virgin Mary, and “Barbara Allen” is a tragic 18th-century love story. The bonus tracks add rare early African American spirituals and sea shanties, showing the breadth of her range.
