Death Valley Girls - Welcome to Earth (2026) [Hi-Res]

BAND/ARTIST: Death Valley Girls

Los Angeles band Death Valley Girls, which has long turned space rock and psych-punk into a vehicle for spiritual inquiry, releases Welcome to Earth, an album born from a personal catastrophe suffered by its leader. Singer and songwriter Bonnie Bloomgarden lost her home in Altadena to California's Eaton Fire, and soon afterward her beloved dog Tommy. The questions that followed — what survives catastrophe, what remains after loss, how to rebuild a life when its old foundations are gone — became the basis of the record.

Unlike the band's earlier work (Glow in the Dark, Darkness Rains, Under the Spell of Joy, Islands in the Sky), where music was an attempt to break free of everyday life, this album is about how to stay connected to the world after devastation. Its central idea is that separation is humanity's most persistent illusion, and that invisible threads bind people, animals, memories, and places. The title works both as a greeting and as a reminder to a species that has forgotten its place in nature.

The making of the album embodies this idea. After the fire, Bloomgarden was held up by the band's members: drummer Bailey Chapman, guitarist Laena Myers, bassist Alana Amram, saxophonist Sarah Safaie, and keyboardist Gregg Foreman, who tragically died soon afterward. They carried her through grief and the first tour after the loss, then waited a full year until she was ready to write again. The result is a more expansive, communal sound; in Bloomgarden's words, the record could not have been made with any other group. For Foreman, it is the last recording with Death Valley Girls.

Despite its subject, the album is joyful. "Plant Magic" turns renewal into a communal celebration, "Basic Witch" (featuring Seth Bogart) transforms heartbreak into hard-won self-awareness, and "Message From the Venus Flower" and "I Love You" treat grief as evidence of an enduring connection. The sound is unmistakable: girl-group harmonies, hazy psychedelia, communal chants, and sing-along choruses. Twenty-three guest vocalists appear, including a children's chorus, longtime collaborator Laura "The Kid" Kelsey, jazz vocalist and multi-Grammy-nominated artist Gretchen Parlato, and Little Ghost, who sang backing vocals, created the artwork, and remained a constant creative presence in the studio and on the road.

The outcome is Death Valley Girls' most intimate and also most expansive album: it refuses to separate the cosmic from the personal and proposes an idea disguised as a danceable rock-and-roll record — healing begins not when grief disappears, but when we recognize how deeply connected we have always been.
