The Dublin-based band Basht is releasing its debut album, Poor Advice, on Lab Records. It is a ten-track concept album about how power bears down on the people beneath it. The first part addresses the historical alliance of church and state in Ireland: pulpits and governments long traded sermons for policy, raising an entire generation on guilt, silence, and obedience. The theme then moves into the present, where moral authority has passed from the church to corporations and security institutions, and the military-industrial complex runs like a relentless mechanism — conflict is stirred up, weapons are sold, grief is managed, and contracts are renewed. The title refers to the counsel that power consistently hands down to ordinary people: keep your head down, say your prayers, trust the deal.
