Copenhagen-based multi-instrumentalists Jason Dungan (known for his solo project Blue Lake) and film score composer Johan Carøe presented their collaborative album Routine. The creation of the record unfolded as an organic, habitual process of shared music-making and sound exploration, serving as a reflection of personal transformations in the musicians' lives, including the birth of children and the loss of family members.
The album's sonic palette bridges acoustic instrumentation — zither, clarinet, cello, and saxophone — with the warm analog textures of tape reels, drum machines, and the classic Yamaha DX7 synthesizer. The musical direction blends elements of folk, avant-garde minimalism, new age, art pop, and leftfield pop, yielding a cinematic and introspective atmosphere. The duo drew aesthetic inspiration from the home-recorded DIY philosophy of Arthur Russell, the catalog of independent labels like Disques du Crépuscule, as well as the experimental NYC and Japanese scenes of the late 1970s and early 1980s. Recorded in low-lit living rooms across Copenhagen and rural Sweden, the project transformed time-stretched improvisation into a delicate study of quiet everyday moments.
