Norwegian musician and composer Erik Wøllo explores spacious abstract electronic soundscapes and ambient on his album EARTHSHINE. Conceptually inspired by the phenomenon of earthshine—reflected sunlight gently illuminating the dark side of the Moon—the work embodies themes of indirect influence, concealed beauty, and unseen support through a seamless sonic tapestry of 20 short, crossfading tracks.
To achieve distinct timbral qualities, Erik Wøllo returned to 1980s 4- and 8-track analog tape recorders, transferring the material to a computer only for final arranging and mixing. Departing from a purely digital workflow in favor of a slower, deliberate analog method—analogous to writing a novel with a pencil—fundamentally transformed his compositional approach. This process imbued the sound with warm harmonic saturation, depth, and organic fluidity, where processed drones and pulsating sequences blend seamlessly into impressionistic canvases of electronic music.
