The Bamako-based musical ensemble Baobab, featuring performer Diaki Lolo, delivers their album Diaki Lolo & Baobab, released via Palenque Records. Formed in the 2010s, the group consists of five to seven members who combine traditional African instrumentation with modern rhythm section arrangements. The core of their sound is rooted in Mandinka music, blended with elements of afrobeat, funk, and rock.
The album features eight tracks recorded and mixed in Bamako. Conceptually, the project addresses various social and personal topics, ranging from global migration and cultural heritage in "Immigre" and "Seguisso" to social commentary in "Kamalenba" and romantic themes in "Soumanako."
The ensemble brings together prominent figures from the Malian music scene. Drummer Sery Thirbaut has previously collaborated with Salif Keïta, Cheick Tidiane Seck, and Amadou & Mariam. Talking drum (tamani) player Lassine Kouayté, born into a line of griots, has performed alongside Bassekou Kouyaté and Amy Yerewolo. Bassist Moctar Ba, son of the leader of Super Biton, spent years touring with Oumou Sangaré, while guitarist Momo represents a new generation of Bamako session musicians.
