In 1986, singer Cyndi Lauper released her second studio album, True Colors, marking a decisive departure from reproducing the vibrant new wave and pop sound of her phenomenal debut, She's So Unusual. Facing intense music industry pressure to deliver another commercial blockbuster, she chose instead to produce a more intimate, mature, and emotionally exposed record. Co-produced alongside Lennie Petze, the album featured guest contributions from Nile Rodgers, Billy Joel, Rick Derringer, Aimee Mann, and The Bangles.
The centerpiece of the album is its title ballad, «True Colors», written by Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly. Cyndi Lauper’s restrained vocal delivery transformed the song into an enduring anthem of self-acceptance, deeply resonating with the LGBTQ+ community and anyone navigating personal struggle. The record's thematic scope directly confronts grief and societal crisis: the poignant track «Boy Blue» was composed for a close friend dying of AIDS during an era marked by intense stigma and misinformation surrounding the disease.
Musically, the album spans a wide genre spectrum. Cyndi Lauper fearlessly reinterprets historical styles—ranging from the doo-wop inflections of «Maybe He'll Know» and the traditional rhythms of «Iko Iko» to a respectful 1980s rendition of Marvin Gaye’s soul classic «What's Going On». Energetic guitar-driven and synthetic arrangements («Change of Heart», «Calm Inside the Storm», «911», «One Track Mind») are balanced by an expressive vocal delivery where raw rasp and emotional tension take precedence over slick commercial polish. Visualized through iconic photography by Annie Leibovitz, the release presented an artist evolving into maturity without sacrificing her distinct identity. Selling over seven million copies worldwide, True Colors cemented Cyndi Lauper’s status as an uncompromising artist who prioritized thematic depth and human empathy over sheer commercial numbers.
