The traditional art of batuku from Santiago Island represents one of Cape Verde's most vital communal traditions, blending music, dance, and oral storytelling. Evolving from West African practices brought by enslaved populations in the 15th century, batuku is primarily performed by women seated in a semi-circle. The genre's sonic framework relies on layered hand percussion, txabéta polyrhythms, the dynamic tornu dance, and call-and-response vocal structures in Cape Verdean Kriolu. Vocalist Taresa Fernandes, leading her ensemble Taresa Fernandes Tradison di Terra, serves as a key figure in preserving and revitalizing this heritage. Her extensive repertoire embodies historical memory, migration narratives, and ancestral resilience while adapting ancient chanting practices to contemporary experience.
