Armenian musician and composer Kevork Nalbandian, orphaned during the Armenian Genocide, journeyed from teaching music in Kilis and living in Syria to becoming a pivotal figure in Ethiopian cultural history. At the invitation of Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie I, he took charge of a unique royal orchestra and choir named Arba Lijoch ("Forty Children"), formed from forty Armenian orphans brought from Jerusalem. Nalbandian trained the young musicians and composed the Ethiopian national anthem, Teferi Marsh, Ethiopia Hoy, which was solemnly performed by the ensemble during the Emperor's coronation on November 2, 1930. Over the course of his career, Nalbandian created more than 50 Ethiopian songs, made a significant contribution to orchestral music, and helped lay the foundations of the country's theatrical arts by founding the Addis Ababa theater.
