Bill Callery's sole album appeared in 1976 on the small Texas label Lone Star, distributed through Columbia. By the time he cut his own record, Callery was already better known as a songwriter for others than as a performer in his own right: Willie Nelson had closed his landmark 1975 concept album Red Headed Stranger with Callery's "Hands on the Wheel," and Jerry Jeff Walker had recorded several of his songs across the mid-1970s — "Leroy" (on It's a Good Night for Singing, 1975) and both "Jaded Lover" and "The Pot Can't Call The Kettle Black" (on Walker's Collectibles, 1974).
Recorded with a crew of Nashville session veterans — bassist Joe Osborn, fiddler Tommy Jackson, pedal steel player Hal Rugg, drummers Jerry Kroon and Karl Himmel, and co-producer Bucky Meadows on guitar — the album gathered much of the same songwriting catalog that had already found homes on other artists' records, presenting it this time in Callery's own voice.
The album has drawn little critical attention over the decades; the fullest assessment comes from the regional country blog Joe Sixpack's Guide To Hick Music, which places the record in the "cosmic cowboy" lineage and describes it as an earthy, mellow set that should appeal to fans of Kris Kristofferson, Jerry Jeff Walker, and Rusty Wier. The LP has never been reissued and circulates only as an original 1976 pressing among collectors.
