The musical project Invisible System, led by British producer Dan Harper, has presented the 16-track album DUB, released on Harper-Joseph Records. The release serves as an archive of unreleased material, singles, and cross-cultural sessions recorded with musicians from Ethiopia, Mali, Jamaica, and the UK. The record's soundscape merges Ethiopian jazz phrasing, Malian percussion traditions, psychedelic textures, and the meticulous aesthetics of UK experimental dub.
The production features Ethiopian legend Mahmoud Ahmed, Gambian musician Juldeh Camara, guitarist Justin Adams (known for his work with Robert Plant), Ozric Tentacles founder Ed Wynne, UK dub outfit Zion Train, and Subhumans frontman Dick Lucas, who delivers post-punk vocals on the closing track. Dan Harper's studio approach relies on spatial decay, echo, and rhythmic restraint, allowing traditional instrumentation—such as African violin and West African percussion—to exist organically alongside heavy basslines. With several Malian contributors having passed away since recording, DUB functions both as a refined studio project and an invaluable historical document of long-term intercontinental musical exchange.
