Armenian State Symphony Orchestra, Sergey Smbatyan - Terterian: Symphony No. 3 (2026) [Hi-Res]
Soviet-era Armenian composer Avet Terterian holds a monumental place in classical music as a pioneer who first integrated traditional folk instruments into a large-scale orchestral format. His Third Symphony, composed in 1975, set a historical precedent by incorporating the duduk and zurna directly into a symphonic score.

The composition relies on striking contrasts between aggressive orchestral expression and intimate, meditative textures. Opening with an extended timpani solo and the raw timbre of the zurna, the piece shifts in its second movement toward a minimalist polyphonic focus: a pair of duduks performs a mournful lament over a sustained drone while the rest of the orchestra remains silent, save for subtle percussion. The extraordinary emotional range of the symphony balances violent brass rhythms with fragile archaic melodies, creating a deep fusion of symphonic music, avant-garde, and Armenian folk music. Performed by the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra under conductor Sergey Smbatyan, this 25-minute score unfolds through broad dynamic strokes and intense rhythmic drive.
