Ghanaian musician and master of the two-stringed kologo lute King Ayisoba presents his seventh studio album, Pure Confusion. Recorded in the UK, the album was produced by dub pioneer and On-U Sound label founder Adrian Sherwood. Their creative partnership originated during a 2017 radio session arranged by long-time collaborator Arnold de Boer (Zea / The Ex), followed by Ayisoba's appearance on the African Head Charge album A Trip To Bolgatanga (2023).
The material for Pure Confusion was captured completely live over a single afternoon at Sherwood's Ramsgate studio. Combining Ayisoba's raw kologo instrumentation and three distinct vocal registers, Sherwood enhanced the sound using live dub mixing desk techniques, experimental processing, and a guest lineup of musicians. The record features contributions from bassist Doug Wimbish (Sugar Hill Gang), multi-instrumentalist Ivan Hussey (Celloman), saxophonist Alex White (Fat White Family), harmonica player Alan Glenn (Little Axe / The Yardbirds), percussionist Ayuune Sule, and Grammy-nominated Ghanaian artist Rocky Dawuni.
Lyrically, the record addresses the complex socio-political landscape of contemporary Ghana: land disputes, corruption, health-related social stigmas, open-mindedness gained through international touring, and deep spiritual reverence for ancestral heritage. Building upon the legacy of landmark releases like Modern Ghanaians (2006), 1000 Can Die (2017), and Work Hard (2023) on Glitterbeat Records, King Ayisoba fuses northern Ghanaian acoustic folk traditions with post-punk, industrial, and electronic elements.
