Musician and composer Khaled Kurbeh presents his second album on the Research Records label, titled Ithā Sajā, comprising nine solo piano pieces. Recorded in his Berlin studio between 2021 and 2022, the material was captured between dusk and dawn, incorporating ambient soundscapes from the urban environment of Kreuzberg and Tempelhof — from U-Bahn rumbles and construction noise to courtyard bird chatter.
Each composition encapsulates personal reflections, poetic metaphors, and cultural ties. The piece "wal-Leil" emerged from theater rehearsals with friends Hend Alkahwaji and Wejdan Nassif, while "wal-Leili" incorporates the traditional jurjina rhythm found in Northern Iraqi and Mesopotamian folk music. In the experimental "Tadāris" series, the artist explores prepared piano techniques using mallets and objects inside the instrument's casing. Tracks like "wan-Najmi", "Ithā Hawā", and the title track "Ithā Sajā" convey contemplative states, ranging from evening walks along the Landwehr Canal to watching the first light of dawn. The gatefold vinyl edition features custom artwork and drawings by Ida Lawrence.
