American composer, multi-instrumentalist, and electronic artist David Shea reflects on the creation of his milestone debut sample-based album Executive Stack, recorded in the early 1990s for the Belgian experimental label Sub Rosa. Following his studies at the Oberlin Conservatory, the musician relocated to New York City, immersing himself in the vibrant Downtown New Music scene while working at Roulette and collaborating with defining figures of the avant-garde including John Zorn, Christian Marclay, Phil Niblock, Shelley Hirsch, and John Cage.
Drawing inspiration from musique concrète, turntablism, and Jiddu Krishnamurti's philosophical concepts regarding the collective nature of the self, David Shea developed a singular compositional strategy. His concept relied entirely on appropriated audio rather than newly generated sounds, utilizing Folkways field recordings, film sound effects, clips from Jean-Luc Godard's cinema, and Tex Avery animation archives. During a European tour, the theft of his primary sampler threatened the project, but support from the Beursschouburg cultural center in Brussels enabled him to acquire an Ensoniq ASR-10 sampler. Operating within the unit's 16-megabyte memory limit, he composed the entire record in a single month, pioneering a dense framework of loop-based structures, phase shifts, and sound montage that anticipated modern sampling and mash-up culture.
