Based on field expeditions conducted between 2011 and 2012, researcher Charles Brooks (Charles Brooks) documented the authentic acoustic traditions of the remote southwestern provinces of Menabe and Tulear in Madagascar. The musical heritage of this region is deeply intertwined with the Malagasy spiritual concept of "maresaka" (maresaka)—a state of all-encompassing vibrational aura wherein music transcends mere performance to become a meditative ritual connecting individuals with their environment and the spirit realm. These field recordings capture the essence of raw African folk and world music, where the natural and supernatural roles of song merge into an uninhibited, living practice.
