The fact that the name and work of the Baden court Kapellmeister Franz Danzi enjoy the highest regard, particularly among wind quintet players, is inherent in a catalog of works that includes, after all, three sets of three compositions for this ensemble that invite further exploration. Apparently, this industrious man had a particular fondness for “wind” instruments—especially the flute, which he featured in three sets with two, three, and four string instruments. After enriching our catalog a few weeks ago with the three Flute Trios, Op. 71, we now present another distinctive collection from Danzi’s pen—the three Quintets, Op. 50—which subtly bridges the gap from the fringes of the Classical period into the realms of the earliest Romantic era: While the first piece in E-flat major unquestionably belongs to the category of light, gallant works, the following Quintet in B minor is tinged with the faint shadows of a new era, after which the predominantly dance-like mood of the final work—interrupted by an expressive Larghetto—concludes the cycle with a touch of nostalgia.
