An American drummer and composer conceived an ambitious percussion project titled 100 Disciplines, which initially started as a minimalist idea: about twenty musicians playing drum rolls through a PA system to create a continuous drone. After receiving a grant and backing from the Red Bull Music Academy, the musician faced severe imposter syndrome and the daunting task of writing a complex academic score. During the preparation process, the concept evolved drastically. Collaborating with Fireworks Ensemble founder Brian Coughlin and musical director Matt Evans, the composer expanded the arrangement to include classical vocalizing inspired by Anonymous 4 and John Tavener, alongside a vast array of pitched percussion instruments ranging from timpani to Thai nipple gongs. The chosen venue—the Beaux-Arts Court at the Brooklyn Museum of Art, featuring a natural seven-second reverb—forced the creator to abandon rapid percussion passages in favor of massive, slow musical gestures. The project took on a deeply personal subtext, reflecting the composer's traumatic experiences following the September 11 attacks, while the title itself became an homage to the compositions of jazz innovator Sun Ra and his Arkestra. Overcoming a profound fear of leading classically trained musicians and a professional production team, the author successfully executed the installation. The performance blossomed into a complex, emotional avant-garde piece that was later mixed into a studio album alongside his work on a Man Forever release.
