American sound artist and researcher Jim Nollman, who released his album "Playing Music with Animals" on Folkways in 1982, established the Orcananda creative residency in British Columbia to foster acoustic dialogue with wild orcas. Between 1985 and 2002, using a floating studio equipped with hydrophones, over 60 hours of interspecies interaction were captured. The compilation "Orcas’ Greatest Hits" gathers key moments from these sessions, where humans and cetaceans co-create an improvisational space blending avant-garde, ambient, and sound art, demonstrating the potential for mutual listening and interaction without disrupting the animals' natural habitat.
