"Catatonia" (1997) is the second studio album by American progressive rock band Salem Hill. This release marked a transitional stage in the band's creative output, moving from the simpler, melodic hard rock sound of their debut to the complex conceptual canvases for which the band became famous on their next album (The Robbery of Murder).
"Catatonia" displays a strong influence of classic progressive rock and neo-prog of the '90s (in the vein of Kansas, Rush, and Styx). The album combines dense guitar riffs, vibrant keyboard parts, the use of Hammond organ and flute, and memorable vocal harmonies.
In contrast to their darker later work, this album sounds more driving and straightforward. Complex instrumental breaks and tempo changes harmoniously blend with accessible melodic structures and a classic rock drive.
The lyrics touch on themes of emotional numbness, internal conflict, the search for meaning, and human relationships.
