Brighton-based alt-folk duo Memorial, comprising Jack Watts and Oliver Spalding, releases their third full-length album Jera via Icelandic composer Ólafur Arnalds' label OPIA Community. The creation of the record followed a profound period of burnout and personal uncertainty: Watts suffered severe exhaustion working night shifts in mental health care, while Spalding navigated health struggles and early fatherhood. Overwhelmed by industry pressures and commercial metrics, the duo chose to step back to preserve their friendship and rediscover their core artistic purpose.
Named after the Elder Futhark rune symbolizing the harvest and the culmination of a cycle, the album was recorded live without a click track in Ólafur Arnalds' snowbound Reykjavík studio before being completed in Brighton alongside long-time collaborator Tim Bidwell. The acoustic arrangements feature intertwined vocal harmonies, acoustic guitar, vintage harmonium, and piano, enriched by guest appearances from Niamh Regan, Lisa Hannigan, Dustin O'Halloran, and Sam Amidon. Moving through themes of renewal, patience, and vulnerability, the album delivers a restrained indie folk soundscape designed to offer solace in a loud world.
