New York-based musician Elijah Wolf, who grew up in the Catskill hamlet of Phoenicia and has spent nearly a decade living in Ridgewood, Queens, releases his fourth solo album, track star, this Friday on his own label, Mtn Laurel Recording Co. The announcement comes alongside a new single, "you, forever."
Following his first two albums, made with collaborators like Nels Cline and Sam Cohen, Wolf grew burned out on life as a full-time musician and chose to return to basics — both in his own work and by building a label to support other artists. track star was recorded in an intimate setting with Told Slant, a Mtn Laurel artist and member of Florist, rather than in the large studio sessions of his earlier work.
The album's ten songs turn toward the experience of growing up in small-town America: high school athletics, empty malls, dive bars, and DUIs — details that build a portrait of community and perseverance in the face of circumstance. The nostalgia isn't sentimental but bittersweet: the place Wolf once longed to escape has become, instead, a source of self-understanding and connection to his roots.
This fall, Wolf will perform the album live at Pitchfork London, where he will also curate a showcase night for Mtn Laurel.
