The live album "Le Pantoum 46" captures a performance by the duo Peals at Le Pantoum, a longstanding DIY venue in Québec City co-run by a friend of the band, Jean-Michel Letendre Veilleux. The recording is the product of a rare alignment of circumstances — the right audience, the right space, and inspired performance coming together to produce a truly exceptional show.
The show took place in 2013, shortly after the release of Peals' album "Walking Field" on Thrill Jockey, during a North American DIY tour the duo undertook alongside the band Small Sur. During this tour, Andy Abelow — at the time a member of Small Sur and a friend of the band — began collaborating with Peals. He improvised alongside them onstage, played on the version of "Blue Elvis" captured here, and went on to keep working with Peals on later records.
Peals' quiet, atmospheric, patient music stood in sharp contrast to the usual DIY-scene sound, dominated by noisy, physical rock bands. Bruce Willen of the duo describes their approach as "aggressively quiet": sets would open minimally and at very low volume, a tactic meant to force the audience into deep attentiveness. He notes that the Québec City crowd tuned into this approach unusually fast — in an era before social media had fully scattered people's collective attention — and the room itself seemed to reshape around the music being played.
By this point in the tour, Peals' matured sound had reached a new stride: their performances became seamless, carefully constructed journeys through inner landscapes and unfamiliar new headspaces, heightened visually by performing in darkness.
