The Fred Kavli Theater brought together an all-star lineup of jazz musicians to honor the life and legacy of composer-arranger Gordon Goodwin, who passed away from pancreatic cancer just three weeks before the tribute — held on what would have been his 71st birthday. Despite the occasion, the mood was joyous and free of sorrow, as attendees celebrated a multi-faceted, award-laden career that included four Grammy wins and three Daytime Emmy awards.
At the heart of the evening was Goodwin's signature 21-piece ensemble, the Big Phat Band, marking its 25th anniversary with performances of key tracks from its history — from the Latin-flavored "Garaje Gato" to a spirited rendition of "Rhapsody in Blue." Beyond leading the band, Goodwin was a major Hollywood figure, contributing arrangements and scores to more than 80 productions, including Pixar's "The Incredibles" and "Ratatouille" and Disney's "The Lion King." A Disney Legend, he began his career as a musician and arranger at Disneyland before going on to create music for Disney parks parades and shows, as well as projects like "Hocus Pocus 2" and "Animaniacs." Over his career he also worked with artists such as Ray Charles, Quincy Jones, and Christina Aguilera.
The evening also featured other jazz greats whose careers intersected with Goodwin's work: vocalist Patti Austin delivered rousing renditions of the jazz standards "Lullaby of Birdland" and "Mack the Knife"; clarinetist Eddie Daniels performed a reimagining of a Benny Goodman classic and a co-written piece with Goodwin, "Under the Wire"; guitarist Lee Ritenour played his own Goodwin-arranged compositions; and vocal group Take 6 performed a three-song set in their signature a cappella style. The night's emotional peak came with a performance by Goodwin's widow, singer Vangie Gunn, who delivered several powerful numbers, including her late husband's wordless vocal piece "Change Is Good," accompanied by video of him playing the piano solo, and closed the show with the anthem "Shine." Proceeds from the evening went to the CancerBlows/Ryan Anthony Foundation for cancer research.
