The band Amanar hails from Kidal, a remote outpost in the Saharan mountains of far northern Mali. For the past fifteen years the group has lived scattered, with its leader, singer-songwriter Ahmed Ag Kaedy, settling in Bamako, Mali's capital. It was there, in small local studios, that the band's new album, "Kel Tamacheq," took shape over several years as a self-produced DIY project made without major labels or outside production teams.
Musically, the album continues the tradition of assouf, the Northern Malian style of Tuareg guitar music brought to global audiences by Tinariwen. Amanar, however, pushes the sound further, giving it a tighter, more kinetic groove that reflects not only its Saharan roots but also the layered, restless energy of life in Bamako.
The album's title translates from Tamasheq as "Tuareg People," and it carries a meaning that reaches beyond music. Recorded with musicians from across Mali's many ethnic communities, the album is conceived as a call for unity aimed at a fractured Tuareg community, parts of which now find themselves on opposing sides of the country's conflict. Kaedy speaks directly to this division: some Tuareg stand with the Malian state, others back the rebels, and still others are tied to jihadist factions. In his view, this internal fracture is the true source of the people's misfortune, and the album was born from a wish to remind listeners that if the Tuareg remember who they are, that memory can keep them on the right path.
In this sense, "Kel Tamacheq" becomes more than a personal statement from Kaedy — it stands as a musical sketch of the Mali he hopes to see: unified and at peace.
