Mike Oldfield - Five Miles Out (2013)

Five Miles Out is the seventh record album by Mike Oldfield, released in 1982, at a time when his music was moving away from large-scale symphonic pieces towards a more accessible pop style. It is one of the very few albums on which Oldfield sings lead vocals, as he is noted for not having any confidence in his voice's qualities. The album produced two singles.
1982's Five Miles Out is Mike Oldfield's seventh studio album. The first half of the album is a 25-minute instrumental piece, followed by several smaller, sometimes pop-like compositions (Five Miles Out, Family Man). (These are also sung by Maggie Reilly, as are some of the earlier and later Oldfield albums.) These pieces provide a transition to the hits of the following albums, the first of which was the 1983 release Crises. The album followed the structure of Platinum and Five Miles Out (and remained typical for this era almost throughout): a longer, mainly instrumental block, and several shorter, mostly vocal pieces. Family Man was also covered by the American duo Hall & Oates in 1983, and their version entered the US Billboard Top 10. It is worth mentioning that this album marks the first time that Simon Philips plays drums, as his playing would leave a slight mark on the sound of Oldfield albums from then on (and who a few years earlier had pounded the skins on Judas Priest's Sin After Sin album as a teenager, and then became a very sought-after session musician).

Simultaneously with the Crises album, on September 2, 2013, an expanded edition of Five Miles Out was released, also curated by the master himself. It is also available in several versions.
