Goat - Commune (2014)

Goat - Commune (2014)

BAND/ARTIST: Goat

Swedish band Goat return with their second album, Commune, delivering a sound that feels untethered from any specific time or place. The record plays like a ritual designed to induce trance, layering dense percussion with winding guitar lines that draw on Middle Eastern musical traditions. The band keeps its trademark pan-cultural approach, pulling influences from across the globe, yet this time the result feels unusually focused and intense. Opener "Talk to God" builds on hypnotic repetition and a slow, mounting tension, conjuring the image of a wild-eyed, possessed preacher whom the listener follows against their better judgment. What follows is a journey somewhere between fever dream and shamanic vision. Closer "Gathering of Ancient Tribes" pushes the album to its most frenzied point, before its final moments — a droning synth and a tolling bell — seem to guide the listener back from an astral state to ordinary reality, acting like a light leading them out of the tunnel. Commune is an album meant to be experienced rather than simply heard: its individual pieces are compelling on their own, but the record's real power comes through only when taken in as a whole, free of outside distraction.
