"Ballerina Breakout" is the debut studio album by American power pop band Lolas (a project by multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Tim Smith from Birmingham, Alabama). The album was released in 1999 on the independent label Screaming Apple Records.
"Ballerina Breakout" is a classic example of late '90s American power pop, heavily influenced by the British Invasion of the 1960s, as well as such iconic representatives of the genre as Big Star, The Raspberries, Cheap Trick, and Matthew Sweet.
Tim Smith practically single-handedly crafted the album's sound, filling it with incredibly catchy melodies, loud, crunchy guitar riffs, sweeping solos, and flawless vocal harmonies. The album sounds vibrant, sunny, and dynamic, combining garage rock 'n' roll drive with a pure pop sensibility.
The release received high praise from critics and genre enthusiasts, cementing Lolas' status as one of the most prominent underground power pop bands of their time.
