The new album Movie by the duo Lifted (Andrew Field-Pickering and Matt Papich) is constructed around the principles of cinematic sound design. Utilizing spatial audio effects, field recordings, and spontaneous improvisation on CDJs, the artists recreate the structure of a motion picture without visual accompaniment. The record is conceptually framed by opening and closing themes, while the narrative unfolds through sonic transitions, dialogue, and environmental noises that simulate the movement of characters through space. A diverse ensemble of guest musicians contributed parts including pedal steel, piano, bagpipes, and drums. Inspired by the filmmaking techniques of Robert Altman and Apichatpong Weerasethakul, the duo foregrounds environmental ambience over traditional musical structures, prompting the listener to utilize their imagination to visualize the surroundings.
