05. The Hebrides, MWV P 7 Fingal's Cave (Rome Version, 1830)
For the second volume of their complete recording of Mendelssohn's symphonic works, Les Ambassadeurs and La Grande Écurie bring together two works that are influenced by the composer's trip to the British Isles in 1829 and his visit to Fingal's Cave. This natural wonder is located on the island of Staffa, which is part of the Inner Hebrides. The overture The Hebrides is performed here in the version written in Rome in 1830, while the Scottish Symphony, which the composer only completed 13 years after the inspiring journey, is performed in its first version from 1842.
