Berg's opera follows the order of the scenes proposed by Frantzos in his 1879 edition of Wojciech, but uses only fifteen of them. The work is intensely touching in its portrayal of the central character, a victim of a society in which there is no place for him. At the same time, she is of the greatest musical interest. This is the first atonal opera, the first opera that does not use an established system of keys, just as "Lulu" was supposed to be the first opera based on Schoenberg's principles of serialism, musical structures based on the order of twelve semitones in an octave. She also uses a number of traditional musical structures, scene by scene, but used in a very different way. There are motives that are clearly related to certain characters and events in the narrative.
