"Soleil Noir – The Folk Years 2004–2005" is a treasured reissue of a landmark album by Belgian musician Benjamin Schoos, also known as Miam Monster Miam. Originally conceived as the soundtrack for Soleil Noir, a film by Olivier Smolders, this project marks a major shift in Schoos’ career, as he moved away from 1990s classic rock toward a strange and evocative folk-blues sound, blending Western motifs with European surrealism.
Composed in just five days, the album combines dusty ballads and cinematic influences (notably Jim Jarmusch’s Dead Man and the music of Ennio Morricone) with ambitious production. Schoos is joined by high-caliber acoustic musicians (including Jacques Stotzem) and the Liège Philharmonic Orchestra, arranged by the late Renaud Lhoest.
With tracks like Sophie and L’origine du monde, this record seeks to transplant the Western universe into Wallonia, expressed through poetic and melancholic French lyrics. The reissue also features previously unreleased adaptations of folk classics (by Woody Guthrie, John Fahey, etc.), co-translated with Jacques Duvall, hinting at future projects such as Hantises and releases on the Freaksville label.
A haunted, hybrid album—part chanson, part soundtrack, part European Americana—this is a singular gem in the landscape of contemporary Belgian music.
