The Direct Way To Melancholy is not only an album of stirring new music, it also doubles up as a prescription best taken just as the blue hour descends, as the title suggests. Liege-born, Brussels-based musician Benjamin Schoos’ latest instrumental album is almost genetically-engineered to incite a sense of wishfulness, and to allow one’s thoughts to drift while also granting the listener space to luxuriate in the moment.
These chamber pop pieces proffer simple, unforgettable melodies, supported by sumptuous strings that help elevate us in a deluxe listening experience. Following the fleeting full orchestral introduction of ‘Sans voix’ (without voice), we plunge headlong into the title track with its plaintive piano, soon accompanied by plucked strings and staccato strokes that consolidate the tristful atmosphere.
Songs like ‘I Love You Sea Monster!’ are almost minimalist in their approach, with a cascading piano buttressed by sympathetic synthetic sounds, and ‘Scripted Reality’, conversely, is predicated on optimistic arpeggios. Elsewhere, the unmistakable Les Ondes Martenot of Christine Ott makes a spooky cameo on the delectable ‘La grande vallée’, and Jerome Mardaga's guitar on ‘Murmuration’ is redolent of Michael Rother’s more reflective moments on his late seventies solo albums.
And then there’s the closing track, written and recorded with French producer Gilles Martin whose credits include Malaria!, Tuxedomoon and Minimal Compact; ‘Droomtuin’ is a mesmerising, psychedelic conclusion to an album already full of surprises. Underground French pop made in Belgium never sounded this texturally lush before. Melancholy is only the press of a button away.
