"We've come to the end of the day: let us say that in the course of that day something important has happened, something significant. But how did this day imprint itself on our memory? As something amorphous, vague, with no skeleton or schema. Like a cloud. And only the central event of that day has become concentrated, like a detailed report, lucid in meaning and clearly defined. Against the background of the rest of the day, that event stands out like a tree in the mist"
Andreij Tarkovskij "Sculpting in Time"
"A Tree in the Mist" is the fifth release as a leader for bass player Matteo Bortone, and it's first and foremost a collective album, you cannot tell who's soloing and who's comping. The composer works as an imaginary cartographer, drawing places which the musicians can then criss cross as they please.
The name of the band is a statement : No Land's, no country, no fixed place. The landscape is ever evolving, as the traveler himself. Matteo Bortone draws inspiration from ancient myths, cosmologies which all celebrate the becoming rather than the being. They help him probe the transformation of the self as we travel, dream, age, remember.
Each composition follows a process of morphing, transmutation, entropy. Every melody, riff, ostinato, acts as a road sign to get lost.
A Tree in the Mist is evocative of a landscape seen through clouds, of memories strung together, of a path through ruins and wild grass.
JULIEN PONTVIANNE : tenor sax
BENJAMIN GARSON : guitar
YANNICK LESTRA : rhodes/synth
MATTEO BORTONE : bass, compositions
