Beyond All Borderlines is an album that explores themes of displacement, memory, and identity through a combination of field recordings, improvisational sound, and piano melodies. Created by Lebanese artist Nour Sokhon and Montreal-based media maker Stefan Christoff, the work examines the borders—both physical and emotional—that define and separate us.

Expanding on Sokhon’s performance-based research project, And Who Are We Now?, Beyond All Borderlines gives voice to the countless individuals who carry a sense of home within them, no matter where they find themselves. The album challenges the listener to reflect on questions such as “Why are you here?” and “Where are you from?”—questions that resonate throughout its narrative, altered and intertwined with sounds of telephones ringing, typing, notifications, and the rhythmic sound of a trolley wheel. Field recordings from Lebanon and Germany, captured over the past few years, add a layer of temporal and spatial complexity.

The soundscapes in Beyond All Borderlines balance moments of fragility with undercurrents of tension, creating a dynamic listening experience. Sokhon’s research-driven method and Christoff’s improvised piano contributions come together to offer a thoughtful meditation on time, memory, and the borders—both seen and unseen— that shape human experience.
