Lonnie Donegan, known as the "king of skiffle," was a British pop superstar born on April 29, 1931. He gained fame in 1956 with his song Rock Island Line, which sold 3 million copies and reached the top 10 in both the UK and US. This success sparked a skiffle boom in the UK, leading to the formation of over 50,000 bands. Within six years, all of Donegan's singles were in the top 10, making him the first to win a Gold Record for a debut release and popularizing the guitar in pop music. In the 1960s and '70s, he toured the world but eventually settled in California due to heart problems. He made a comeback in 1978, participating in Putting On The Style alongside Elton John and Ringo Starr. Donegan received numerous awards for his contributions to music, including the Ivor Novello Award and an MBE. He continued performing, recording albums and going on tours, and even received a special model Martin guitar in his honor.
