It's hard to imagine a 'Road' picture without Bing Crosby and Bob Hope. Both under contract to Paramount Pictures, studio executives became aware of a sparkling chemistry between the pair and instructed writers Frank Butler and Don Hartman to find a suitable property for them. A project for George Burns and Gracie Allen that had come to nothing was considered but rejected, so they dug out one of their own scripts for a film intended for Jack Oakie and Fred MacMurray entitled "Road To Mandalay" but turned down by the duo. Revised with suitable gags and song-slots, it became "Road To Singapore" for Bing and Bob. Romance and beauty was provided by another Paramount star, Dorothy Lamour, a lady who would be well worth fighting for, as illustrated by the comments that open this collection of songs from the six 'Road' pictures made between 1939 and 1952.
