Pianist Glenn Doig releases his debut album, Trio, featuring Brett Hirst on bass and Simon Barker on drums, through Earshift Music. The album includes eight original compositions that highlight Doig’s evolving artistic voice over two decades in the jazz piano trio format.
Trio showcases various musical moods, blending Doig’s influences with his unique style. Each piece balances concise forms and strong melodies, exploring sophisticated harmonies and rhythms, from reflective ballads to energetic pieces.
Doig values the collaboration with Hirst and Barker, saying, “Their expressiveness and understanding brought a fresh connection to the material. Our effortless rapport is central to the recording.”
A graduate of the Sydney Conservatorium, Doig has been active in Sydney’s jazz scene for over a decade, leading the Doig Collective and Big Band, and receiving recognition with an ABC Jazz recording and a commission for the Sydney International Women’s Jazz Festival.
The album Trio is a milestone for Doig, summarizing 20 years of musical growth and collaboration. “These are my favorite compositions, evoking bittersweet moods and singable melodies reframed in new ways. The trio format let me reconnect with the piano and explore its full sound in a personal way,” Doig shares.
