Oakland-based band Naked Roommate, active since 2018, started as a duo with Andy Jordan and Amber Sermeno (both formerly of The World) and expanded to a full group with the addition of Michael "Mig" Zamora and Alejandra Alcala. Their debut album Do The Duvet was released in 2020. In 2024, they’re set to release their sophomore album Pass The Loofah, recorded between 2021-2023. The lineup now includes Geoff Saba and Jeanne Oss on saxophones, marimba, and percussion.
Pass The Loofah retains the high energy of their debut while drawing on rhythmic influences from artists like Kid Creole & The Coconuts, ESG, and UK’s On-U Sound, blending post-punk, disco, funk, and house with a West Coast irreverence and Neo-socialist themes. Tracks like the first single, “Bus,” pulse with danceable beats, while songs like “Fight Flight” and “Broken Whisper” add funky horns and Caribbean influences. Instrumental interludes bring experimental, sci-fi soundscapes, and the closing track, “I Can’t Be Found,” channels late-night vibes reminiscent of early Daft Punk. Overall, the album captures dance music’s community spirit, using upbeat sounds to address social issues and Bay Area struggles with disaster capitalism and tech culture.
