Composer, impresario, conductor, pianist, singer, and harpist Laura Constance Netzel (1839–1927) was known and esteemed under the pseudonym ‘Lago’. She was born in Finland, but grew up in Stockholm, where her piano teacher Mauritz Gisiko was responsible for her initial musical education. Later she studied voice under opera singer Julius Günther, and piano under Viennese virtuoso pianist Anton Door. She made her début as a pianist at the age of 18 with Carl Maria von Weber’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in E-flat major, and according to Stockholms Dagblad was admired for her ‘aplomb’ and ‘assuredness’. She was then quite active as a piano soloist and as a chamber musician. In 1866, she married physician in obstetrics and gynaecology, Nils Wilhelm Netzel (1834–1914), who was four years her senior. They had four children: Sigrid, Nils, Malin and Laura. While married, she continued to perform publicly as a singer and pianist, and actively participated in the Harmoniska Sällskapet (an egalitarian group of amateurs and professionals who met in their love of music) and in King Oscar II’s musical soirées.
