The fourth installment of the Smetáček series is a collection of 20th century Russian symphonies! How amazing is Shostakovich's 3rd, which creates a powerful drama with a tremendous tension despite its avant-garde musical ideas! The gripping sense of speed and resolute development, as well as the final chorus sung loudly in Czech, are very thrilling. Prokofiev's 7th, on the other hand, is full of beautiful songs, and the development of the melodies that are spun and played one after another in an uplifting rhythm is thrilling. Both pieces are superb performances known only to those in the know, fascinated by Smetáček's outstanding interpretation and skillful orchestral drive!
Smetáček, who has systematically taken up 20th century works, set his sights on May Day in 1974, while the composer was still alive, probably with the intention of actively reevaluating the music of the Russian avant-garde, which came to an end due to the oppression of the establishment. The lyrics of the finale were written in Czech, presumably to allow Czech audiences to better understand the composer's intentions. The performance is full of centripetal force and power, and it can be said to be a masterpiece that truly shows off Smetáček's talent for choral works. (From Shigeo Itakura's commentary)
