Philipp Schupelius, Marie Sophie Hauzel - PAU! A Tribute to Casals (2023) [Hi-Res]

With his concept "PAU! A Tribute to Casals", Philipp Schupelius convinced the jury of the Fanny Mendelssohn Förderpreis and was chosen as the 2023 winner of the renowned concept prize. Now the 20-year-old Berliner's debut album, which was developed from the winning concept and financed by the Fanny Mendelssohn Förderpreis, is about to be released. In the 50th year of Pablo Casal's death, Philipp Schupelius musically illuminates the life work and world of thought of the cellist of the century. "What can music oppose a war?" - Casals pursued this question throughout his life.

The young Berlin cellist only won the German Music Competition in August 2023, and now the next step in his promising soloist career is already on the horizon for Philipp Schupelius: The release of his debut album on 15 September on the Hamburg label ES-DUR. "PAU! A Tribute to Casals" is a tribute to the Catalan musician who is considered one of the greatest cellists of the 20th century and whose 50th death anniversary we will mark in October 2023.

"The only weapons I have ever possessed are my cello and my conducting baton." said Casals, whose Catalan name "Pau" means peace. Pablo Casals made history not only through his impressive playing and interpretations of Bach's cello suites, but also through his political commitment and humanist stance. His commitment to peace and human rights is still a role model today. Pau Casals is therefore also a role model for Philipp Schupelius. On his debut album, the young cellist, together with the pianist Marie Hauzel, goes in search of what Casals still has to say to us today. The two met through the intermediary of violinist Daniel Hopes, who also contributed the foreword to the album.

In their search, the musicians came across harrowing events and impressive people, great courage, astonishing resilience and, last but not least, unspeakably beautiful things. "'I want to play for you what is beautiful' - that's what the violinist Eugène Ysaÿe said to the soldiers he visited at the front during the First World War," Philipp Schupelius recounts, _"'I always had to think of that when recording the CD." _ Besides music by Pablo Casals himself, the album also features works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Olivier Messiaen, Enrique Granados, Ludwig van Beethoven and Eugène Ysaÿe. Schupelius and Hauzel were allowed to record in the Beethovenhaus in Bonn: Casals had given his only concert there in Germany after the war.

Philipp Schupelius is the ninth winner of the Fanny Mendelssohn Prize, which celebrates its 10th anniversary next year. The special feature of the concept prize, which originated from a private initiative of Heide Schwarzweller from Hamburg, is that it does not only assess the technical virtuosity of the musicians, but focuses much more on their innovative concepts and visionary design. In addition to covering the costs and accompanying the production of a debut album, the prize includes a prize-winner concert at the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival as well as participation in concerts of the Fanny Mendelssohn Artists at the Elbphilharmonie, the Frauenkirche Dresden, at a specially founded festival in the South of France or at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, among others.
