Yes is a progressive rock band formed in London in 1968 by Jon Anderson and Chris Squire. They are considered one of the most respected progressive bands in the world, along with Pink Floyd, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Genesis and King Crimson.
The group reached its heyday in the '70s with The Yes Album, Fragile, Close To The Edge and Tales From Topographic Oceans. They have sold more than 50 million albums worldwide, including 13.5 million in the United States.
Their music is characterized by long, meticulously developed, large-scale compositions, which require serious instrumental knowledge from the performers. One of their most famous tracks, Roundabout, was the one that drew attention to the progressive music style. The band has been in existence for forty years and has been performing concerts, even though the members are all over 60.
In the first years after the founding of Yes, the style that would later become their trademark had not yet developed, on their first records (Yes 1969, Time and a Word 1970) the signs of psychedelic rock were more noticeable, under the influence of groups such as The Beatles or The Who .
However, with the arrival of Steve Howe in 1971, everything changed: the music of The Yes Album is now true progressive rock; the first larger-than-life songs appeared on the disc, including Yours Is No Disgrace, Starship Trooper and Perpetual Change. The soundtrack of 1972's Fragile also includes two tracks of a similar caliber (Roundabout and Heart of Sunrise), but it wasn't until the release of 1972's Close To The Edge that 20-minute multi-movement songs such as Close To The Edge, Ritual and the Gates Of Delirium.
This era did not last long either; only 1973's Tales From Topographic Oceans and 1974's Relayer can be classified in this category: the music of 1977's Going for the One and 1978's Tormato are already more comprehensible.
