Vocalist Jon Anderson and bassist Chris Squire formed Yes in 1968, with their former bandmates guitarist (who came up with the name), keyboardist Tony Kaye, and drummer Bill Bruford recruited from an ad in Melody Maker.
Lester Bangs said of Yes’s debut album in Rolling Stone 1970: “This is the kind of album that sometimes insinuates itself into your routine with a totally unexpected thrust of musical power. Because all of it is excellently done: brisk fuzz leads, whirring bass, a bit of the Beatles vocally, a touch of Wes Montgomery in the guitar solos—a definitive album, in fact, in the prevalent style of “hip” groups over the past two years.”
