Rúnahild is a singer, musician and composer hailing from the mountains of Western Norway. Her ethereal folk music is characterized by heartfelt female singing, earthly rhythms and dreamy melodies. Her free spirited lifestyle close to nature, following the rhythm of the northern seasons, is an inseparable part of her artistic expression.
The creation of Free Spirit started with the song Veiviser, which is a song about weaving together our healing energies to find a path where humanity as a whole reconnects to nature. It is about remembering that all life on earth is of equal value and that none is above nor under. We all exist as a part of a whole within the web of life.
The next song that came to life was "Light within the Dark", which is about holding space for each other’s wounds and healing journey.
Leading to the birth of “Essens”, which is about coming home to one’s essence and core energy, to find our very own path when integrating our authentic self.
And so came the song Free Spirit, which is the concept I had envisioned from the start for this new album.
To me, this concept is about releasing oneself from religious/societal dogmas.
Religions and systems of all kind and cultures have been and still are being used to assert power and dominance over others, to impose a set of rules defining what is acceptable and what is not and persecute all who do not abide by or fit within the frame of this definition.
And in a world where religions and worldviews are still actively used to justify taking away women's rights and freedom, this is also a release that stands against the idea that the feminine energy should be tamed and submissive, and thereby against sexual violence, all forms of abuse and oppression.
To me, this way of seeing the world affects not only the way we treat each other but also reflects on our way of treating nature, by always demanding more production, always taking more ressources while disregarding the wilderness in favor of profit.
