The inspiration for the recording of my new album «Seidsang» was initiated at the november full moon 2017 that followed the celebration of the night of the ancestors and ended at the full moon of the night of the witches (a.k.a Walpurgisnacht) the 30th april 2018.
It started with an invocation to the Disir, female ancestors in the Norse mythology, which was emphasized by a drum journey together with a woman who had just appeared in my life but with who the connection was instant. During our drumming, words were streaming through me to call for inner healing in the light of the full moon to shine in the darkest corners of the soul, mind and heart.
Life took me then on a new journey leading me back to my inner underworld and darkness, starting as always with an emotional collapse and embracing the energy of the storm. At the heart of my darkness was born the song «Vegvisir» (the one to show the way) which was inspired after a trip to a lighthouse in a storming weather in December. The trip was very much reflecting my own inner world, we were heading for the lighthouse of Kråkenes which is known to be one of the heaviest place and most stormy on the west coast of Norway. The lighthouse was referred to as Vegvisir on a newspaper article - the guiding light in the roughest storms keeping you safe away and helping you find your way when everything seems dark and harsh. The sea itself is also symbol for the subconscious and for the hidden emotions and our inner mysteries. This song is therefore mirroring the previous one Disir, representing the light shining in the darkest places and reaching to the depth of our inner sea of emotions.
According to the shamanic tradition, when we experience traumatic experiences, a part of ourselves can sometimes leave our soul and one of the role of the shaman is to travel to the ethereal realm and bring back this piece of ourselves and breath it within our energy field again to heal us. «Bortanfor Sløret» (beyond the veil) is a song inspired by a personal experience reminding strongly of this shamanic practice.
The song «Når Mørket Erindrer Lys» (when the darkness remembers the light) is like the light of dawn finally reminding the night about the day and the storm about the sunshine…
At the full moon of january, I participated to a women circle that gave birth to the song «Kvinnekraft» (Feminine energy). It is inspiring to be within a circle of women when we can all share our inner world with one an other, without any judgment, jealousy or competition; no one over nor under - only real sisterhood. It creates a safe space to open up our real and whole self including both our light and darkness. It reminded me that when I was younger, I wished I had been born as a man because I mostly experienced being woman as a weakness… so I repressed a lot of my feminine energy for a certain period of time but then have grown to be proud of being born as a woman and to recognize my intuition, sensitivity, emotions and also untamed wilderness and femininity in its whole expression as pure strength. I am deeply grateful for the women who have reminded me of that gift I carry. When we gather as sisters, we can heal our sacred femininity together.
The next song I recorded is named «Kvitbjarkan» (White Birch). It was inspired from a journey to northern norway at the winter solstice. At the darkest time of the year, the sun is never rising above the horizon that far north, but the sky is painted with northern light and the moon brightens the snowy landscape. The northern lights are connected to the dancing spirits of the ancestors who give us their blessings. This journey symbolized for me the beginning of my journey back to light and life, resting in the winter energy while nurturing the roots in my inner underworld.
«Songane som Sildrer inn i Sjela» (the songs flowing within the soul) was originally an improvised record with one of my dear friend and I while sitting by the river as it was opening up again and freeing itself from the ice after winter. For us, it felt like the water was singing through us, like her wisdom and life energy was just taking us within her flow.
«Nornegaldr» (incantations of the Norns) was the last song I recorded after an utesitting ceremony under the full moon of the night of the witches. The utesitting is an old ritual which consists of sitting somewhere in nature in silence from sunset to sunrise, merging with the world of the spirits and opening the soul to be guided by the unseen world. I chose to sit in the marshes and the experience was of the most mystical, among the songs of birds guiding into and out of darkness under the haunting silver shine of the moon. The song is about calling to the inner strength, to fully empower one’s destiny and dare shining one’s authentic light.
The intro «Berkana» and outro «Seidsang» were both inspired from dreams… I dreamt the song «Seidsang» after my previous album «Seidrúnar» was about to be released. When I dreamt this song, I felt that this third album should be named after it.
